From Nov 24 you will just need a 'common ticket' to travel by the DTC buses and the Delhi Metro The 'card' which would be used for the common ticketing system is still being put into place. The demand for such a 'common ticket' was being made for a long time as it would modernise and integrate the city's transport system. A few months ago, the government had announced that it would put into place the common ticketing system before the Commonwealth Games 2010. The system would be of great help during the Games.

Come Friday, Delhiites will have to shell out more for taking a metro ride. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced across the board hike in fares ranging from Rs 2 for short distances to Rs 8 for longer hauls. Fares have been revised to cope with increase in costs and help DMRC meet its huge interest and loan repayment burden, which will be in the range of Rs 500-600 crore per year after the opening of phase-II sections. In comparison to the fares of other metros, except for Kolkata, the charges of Delhi metro are the lowest in the world. Now, a metro ride from Vishwavidyalaya to Rajiv Chowk will cost Rs 15 instead of Rs 11. The fare charged for travelling from Tilak Nagar to Rajiv Chowk has now been revised from Rs 13 to Rs 18. The minimum fare has been raised from Rs 6 to Rs 8, while the maximum fare has been hiked to Rs 30 instead of Rs 22. Scripting yet another chapter in its history, the Delhi Metro today crossed the capital for the first time as a brand new train chugged into Noida. The Metro's move into the satellite township of Delhi is expected to bring a paradigm shift in the travelling habits of people in the National Capital Region. DMRC's estimate is that about 53,000 people will daily use the new age transport system after the opening of the Noida corridor. The Noida corridor, built at a cost of Rs630 crore, is completely elevated and will be integrated with the existing 34.3 km Yamuna Bank-Dwarka Sector-9 segment, extending the total length of Line-3 to 47.4 km. Be it punctuality or efficacy of service, Delhi Metro officials claim the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) ranks among the top five metro rail systems in the world. Despite several teething problems, most of which, officials claim, stem from a lack of awareness among Metro commuters, DMRC officials feel the mass rapid transit system has fared quite well and managed to deliver services at par with international standards.

After going through some bad phase and accidents Metro seems to be charging up to be back on track. Not only will the upcoming Akshardham metro station here be the tallest to be built so far, it will also be the most aesthetically done so that it complements the magnificent Akshardham temple nearby. Scheduled to be opened mid-November, when the International Trade Fair is on in the capital, the Akshardham metro station with its six levels will beat the Kashmere Gate metro station which is the tallest as of now. The Akshardham station will be the tallest metro station built so far, having six levels and standing 16.5 metres above the ground and 21 metres from the basement. As of now, the Kashmere Gate metro station which stands 15 metres above the ground, is the tallest station.The six levels of the station will be connected by seven escalators and four lifts.
